Microsoft’s attempts to portray themselves as a supporter of open source got a boot when it became clear that they are ready to start another round of back door bullying. Let us try to dig a bit deeper into their noise.
- Most likely, it is yet another noise generating attempt to get some press when there is lot of pressure on them from the business side
- Probably it is an attempt to strong arm other Linux vendors to fall in line like Novell
- Trying hard to show themselves relevant by taking the steam off the success of open source in this “Web 2.0″ economy
Apart from the above mentioned trivialities, I don’t see any other reason for their whine. They know pretty well that if they sue, they will get counter sued by FSF. They have almost lost their previous proxy fight behind SCO and they know that a direct fight will take them down. So this is yet another desperate move by Microsoft in this seemingly non-microsoft world. They will whine and a few losers will bite their bait and it will end there. Even if they actually go forward with their fight, it will be good in a way, because by the end of the legal fight, Microsoft will be a history. Some of the companies relying on open source might become the collateral damage in this fight but it will also spell an end to Microsoft. Open source, as such, will remain unscathed through the whole saga.
